Fault investigation and repair scope
A computer repair request may involve failure to start, unexpected shutdowns, a damaged screen, charging problems or applications that repeatedly freeze. The scope should distinguish the symptoms from a confirmed diagnosis, so a suspected cause doesn’t become an assumed repair.
Software troubleshooting, component replacement and setting up a replacement computer are different jobs. Explain which outcome you need, including whether you want to discuss repairing the existing device or moving to another computer.
Files and existing arrangements
If access to your files is part of the problem, identify that requirement separately. Repairing a device, recovering files and transferring files to a replacement computer need distinct consideration. Mention whether a backup exists without sending its contents.
Include any warranty or existing support arrangement relevant to the device. For several affected work computers, our business IT support page covers the wider requirements.
Useful details for your repair request
Include what you already know:
- The device make and model, if known.
- The operating system, if known.
- The observed problem and any existing error message.
- When the problem began and any recent damage or changes.
- The tasks affected and your preferred timing.
Describe missing information as unknown. Don’t open the computer or reproduce a fault to complete your message, and don’t include passwords, one-time codes or private files.
